  1. CLIMATE:
  2. [M 001 / Chartres] is situated in north France, just west of Paris. The climate of this region is fairly cold and wet in the winter and warm with a good deal of sunshine in the summer. However, warm clothes, waterproof coats and shoes are recommended all year round.

  4. HEALTH:
  5. No health precautions are necessary for visiting France. There are excellent hospitals, both in the town of Chartres and in nearby Paris.

  7. CURRENCY:
  8. The French Franc (F) is the currency used in France. It is subdivided into 100 centimes. Bills of 20, 50, 100 and 500 francs are issued and coins of 5, 10, 20 and 50 centimes are also used. The exchange rate is currently fixed at 5.6 francs to the US dollar. There are plenty of French banks in the town and most shops, hotels and restaurants accept major credit cards and travelers' checks.

  11. Visitors to France from most countries do not need a visa but must travel with a valid passport. To be certain, check with the French embassy in your country of residence beforehand.

  14. France uses the metric system for all weights and measures.

  17. The voltage is  220 v, 50 cycles; round pronged plugs are commonly used.

  19. COMMUNICATIONS:

France has good communications facilities generally. There is an excellent telephone system and international calls are easily made in Chartres from most of its hotels. French television and radio are both excellent and radio and TV stations from around the world can also be tuned into. There are many excellent French newspapers, and major American and European publications are also available in good hotels in the town.

  23. Chartres is a small modern town whose inhabitants are used to visitors from all over the world. No special etiquette is required for visiting a Christian church except that it should be respected as a place of worship.

Two principal airports serve Paris. Most foreign flights land at the Charles de Gaulle airport, also referred to as Roissy, which is the newer and more modern of the two. Taxis take about 50 minutes to reach downtown and cost approximately 140 francs. There is also an Air France airport bus that runs between the airport and Porte Maillot in the 16th arr: from there it is easy to get downtown. The other airport, Orly, services mainly domestic and chartered air traffic. A taxi from this airport to the center takes about 30 minutes and costs around 100 francs. A public bus service, the Orlybus, runs to the the Denfert-Rochereau Metro station in southern Paris every 15 minutes.

  32. There are airport buses from Charles de Gaulle Airport, to Montparnasse station in the west of Paris (one-way price: F 78), where a direct train to Chartres is available.

There is a direct railway service from Montparnasse station in west Paris to Chartres. Trains run every half hour (or more frequently) 24 hours a day. The fastest service takes under an hour and the slower services which stop frequently take about one and a half hours. The price for a second-class return ticket is F118. This is the most efficient way to travel to Chartres from Paris.

  62. Local buses run to Chartres from Paris, and although some direct buses are available, this method of transport is less efficient than the train.

  64. ROAD TRANSPORT:
  65. Chartres is on a major auto-route from Paris (A10). Traveling by car from Paris to Chartres is quick (about 50 minutes to one hour), but it may be difficult to find parking space in the town during the summer months when many tourists visit the cathedral.

Chartres is an extremely popular tourist destination and very close to Paris, so many major Paris hotels organize their own tours to the town. In Chartres, tours of the city and the cathedral can be arranged at the Chartres Tourist Office, located in Place de la Cathedrale, Chartres (37.21.54.03).

French restaurants in Chartres are very good and in varying price ranges. The Office of Tourism lists French restaurants under 'traditional,' which serve a full range of French cuisine, and 'brasseries' which serve predominantly grill food and are much less expensive than the traditional restaurants. There are also 'creperies' which serve sweet and savory pancakes. Fast food, American, Italian and Vietnamese food is also available.

MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS OF CHARTRES: 29 Cloitre Notre-Dame, 28000 Chartres (37.36.41.39). Open every day except Tuesday from April 1 to October 31 from 10am - 6pm, and from November 1 to March 31 from 10am - 12pm and from 2pm - 5pm. The museum is closed on January 1, May 1, May 8, November 1, November 11 and December 25.
  136. Situated in the former Bishop's Palace, this museum contains many art treasures including paintings, tapestries, sculpture and Celtic masks. The 16th and 17th Italian, Spanish, Dutch and French painters are all well represented and there are some beautiful collections of modern art.

  138. MUSEUM OF MACHINES AND AGRICULTURAL METHODS (Le Compa): Pont de Mainvilliers, 28000 Chartres (37.36.11.30). Open Tues - Fri: 10am - 6pm, and Sat and Sun: 10am - 7pm. Closed on Mondays. 
  139. The Chartres area is a major agricultural region. The museum has displays of agricultural machinery and techniques through the ages.

  141. INTERNATIONAL CENTER FOR STAINED GLASS: 5 Rue du Cardinal Pie, Chartres (37.21.65.72). Open daily from 10am - 12:30pm and from 1:30pm - 6pm.

This center aims to promote and develop the craft of stained glass today. There are exhibitions of work from all over the world as well as exhibits which explain the making of stained glass, how ancient stained glass is restored and explanations of the iconography used in the glass. There is also a documentation center with a library and slide collection located at 23 Cloitre Notre-Dame, Chartres.

  144. THE MOSAIC HOUSE (La Maison Picassiette): 22 Rue du Repos, Chartres (37.34.10.78). 
  145. This extraordinary and beautiful house is decorated both inside and out with pieces of broken china and colored glass which are made into pictures and designs.
